Chief Connextion Officer – Susannah E. Shumate, CFRE
Susannah is a native Middle Tennessean, having been born and raised in Clarksville, Tennessee. She was graduated from Rhodes College in Memphis with a Bachelor of Arts in History, with an emphasis on the American South. She carried out graduate work in the Public History program at Middle Tennessee State University. Susannah holds a Master of Arts in Organizational Management from Trevecca Nazarene University, where she served as a class representative to the university’s faculty and staff.
Through her career, Susannah has served at a variety of not-for-profit organizations in Middle Tennessee, including the Metropolitan Nashville Hospital Authority, Nashville Civic Design Center, and Second Harvest Food Bank of Middle Tennessee. She has served in a variety of chief executive, development, marketing, media and public relations, and community relations roles. Susannah considers herself a “professional matchmaker” and considers it an honor to perform the work she does.
Susannah holds the credential for development professionals, Certified Fund Raising Executive (CFRE). To receive the credential, professionals must have at least five years’ experience in the field; complete an application proving service to the field, continuing education, and amount of funds raised; and pass a comprehensive examination on all aspects of fundraising. Susannah received her credential in 2009, and she must re-certify every three years. Only 6,000 people in the world hold the CFRE credential.
Her board service has included terms on the boards of Hands On Nashville, Historic Nashville, and the Skyline North Business Council of the Nashville Chamber of Commerce. She co-founded the Nashville’s Food Security Network (now defunct). Additionally, she sat on, and served as president of, the boards of the Association of Fundraising Professionals-Nashville Chapter and the Nashville Volunteer Administrators’ Network.
In her spare time, Susannah is an avid reader, writer, and crafter; she makes handmade greeting cards. She enjoys spending time with her husband and their four-legged children - their Schnoodle, Everett, and a very vocal black cat named Marlowe.
